Frequently asked questions
We start listening and recording the audio of baby’s heartbeat at 13 weeks, as the 2nd trimester is beginning, and can listen anytime after that. Typically, we can see and measure baby’s heartbeat between 7-13 weeks, in our Early 2D appointments, but we’ll wait until they’re more developed to actually listen to their heart.
For views of details on their face: The best window is generally between 27 and 32 weeks, when the baby has developed more fat, giving a more defined face.
For a view of the entire baby: An earlier scan between 14 and 22 weeks can show the baby as a whole.
For twins: The best time for clear images of both babies is between 20 and 26 weeks.
Later in pregnancy: While it's possible to get good images after weeks or even later, the baby has less room, which can make it more difficult
Baby's position: If the baby's face is turned toward the spine, it can be difficult to get good pictures.
Amniotic fluid: A sufficient amount of clear amniotic fluid is crucial for clear images, which is why drinking plenty of water is recommended.
Other factors: The baby's overall fetal environment, placental location, and maternal body habitus can also affect image quality.
We’ll do ultrasounds for any expectant mothers that are 7 weeks into pregnancy and beyond. We love to help if you would like to see baby’s heart beating or see a preview of what they’ll look like. We don’t do anything regarding medical details and so cannot replace medical care or medical monitoring of baby’s or mom’s health.
The 2D ultrasound is the black and white picture that you are accustomed to seeing. This type of ultrasound is most commonly used in a doctors office to check on your baby's health. The 3D ultrasound gives you an excellent 3D still image of your baby where you can even see some facial features. 4D ultrasounds use the same technology as the 3D ultrasounds, but time, the fourth dimension, means that you can see your baby moving in real time, and take home a video of their motion!
